Orangevale school reports

Safe Routes to School reports have been added for all schools in the Orangevale CDP (Census Based Place planning area, which is not identical to the 95662 zip code).

Full assessments (Pasteur) include walk and bike audits, extensive observations, and meetings with school staff, and result in extensive recommendations for off-campus, on-campus, and program. Quick assessments (Carnegie, Orangevale, Twin Lakes) include some observations and staff consultation, and have limited recommendations. Existing conditions reports (Casa Roble, Green Oaks, Oakview, Ottomon, Pershing, Trajan) document existing conditions and may include a few recommendations based on requested problem solving by principals.

Mariposa sidewalk work

The City of Citrus Heights has a project underway to close the remaining sidewalk gaps on Mariposa Avenue between Skycrest Elementary and Greenback Lane. Most of the sidewalks in this section were completed under earlier projects, and have enhanced safety for walkers and bicyclists along Mariposa Avenue. The new sidewalks will have ADA ramps at every corner. Where there is a vertical offset between yards and the sidewalk, there will be low concrete walls. This project is known as Mariposa Sidewalks Phase 3, and is funded by an ATP (Active Transportation Program) Safe Routes to School grant.

The final sidewalk gaps on Mariposa Avenue between Skycrest Elementary and Madison Avenue will be completed by Mariposa Sidewalks Phase 4, another Safe Routes to School Project, which will likely start construction in the spring of 2020. These sidewalk infill (and bike lane enhancement) projects benefit particularly Skycrest Elementary, Kingswood K-8, and San Juan High students, but the entire community, as well.

Walk to School Week 2019

Walk to School Week for San Juan Unified will be September 30 through October 4, 2019. The official Walk to School Day is on Wednesday, October 2, but many schools find other days to work best for them, so we are celebrating all week. Many schools combine walking and bicycling, calling the event Walk+Roll, Walk+Bike, or similar names that celebrate all modes of active transportation. Ask your principal what your school is doing for the week. More information about the event, and school registration, is available at http://www.walkbiketoschool.org/.

The Safe Routes to School program in San Juan can provide limited support to schools with ideas, organizing support, and documents. Contact Dan Allison, Safe Routes to School Coordinator, dan.allison@sanjuan.edu.
